Halloween: A Retrospect Look and a Message to the Church

Brothers, sisters and friends…

Halloween and participation in it is at best ignorant and, at worst, demonic. We can understand, perhaps, those outside the church to be unaware—although a casual look at its associations (TV, advertisements, movies, etc.), costumes and traditions is a highly visible reminder of its evil roots and components and influence—but God’s people should not be asleep or unaware concerning this matter. More on that later.
Let’s educate ourselves generally so we can be sober and knowledgeable about it before we go any further. “All Hallow’s Eve” is the day before November first. The first of November is a Catholic Church-initiated day to commemorate the saints who have passed away. The word “hallow” means holy, as in the Lord’s Prayer, “…hallowed be thy name…” speaking of God. The preceding day, October 31st now designated as Halloween, originated in Scotland, Wales and Brittany. According to AmericanCatholic.org, it “marked the beginning of a new year and the coming of winter.” They (the Celts) celebrated the festival of Samhain, Lord of the dead. This is already wrong as Jesus is the only Lord and the first commandment tells us, “I am the Lord Your God…you shall have no other gods before Me.” Right away we know this holiday is worldly, pagan, demonic and contrary to God’s laws. James 1:27 tells us to keep ourselves “unstained from the world.”

The World Book Encyclopedia states also that the Celts celebrated this ancient pagan festival over 2,000 years ago and that the people “believed that the dead could walk among the living.” The practice of carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns began in Britain. In the 1600’s, that term referred to a watchman who carried a lantern for light at night while on duty; the term “jack” is synonymous with boy. It was also a phrase to describe unknown fluttering lights that were thought to be ghosts or some other spirit we would consider to be evil. Young boys used to carry these to spook people. There is even a legend from Ireland of a man known as “Stingy Jack” who, as folklore has it, played a trick on the Devil by inviting him to have a drink with him at a pub. He convinced the evil one to turn himself into a coin to pay for the drinks because he was stingy, hence the name. Leaving out some details in order to make a long story short, the enemy didn’t like this and cursed Jack by making him wander the earth aimlessly with only a hollowed-out turnip (with a burning coal inside) to light his way. Jack was a liar and a manipulator and played with the accuser.

Today, everything associated with Halloween is evil from changing into a costume of something or someone you are not (vampire, ghost, witch, zombie, skeleton…) to going to parties and drinking, to smashing pumpkins among other things. A brilliant family member described it quite factually as “picking a day, dressing up as something weird, going to strangers’ houses and asking them for something free as if it’s expected.” I first laughed at how odd it sounded, but then I realized the perfect encapsulation of this dangerous holiday.

Now to the believers and Christ-followers among us. I have noticed for a few years now how the churches have handled Halloween where we live. I may be wrong, but I’m assuming it’s the same in the rest of the country because it’s a deceptive mindset more than it is a tradition. It may be based on ignorance (lack of knowledge), secular practices or on purpose. We should not be able to claim ignorance, especially as a pastor or a relatively mature believer. And, if you are one of those, it is your/ our responsibility to make sure the less mature and new are instructed properly. If it is because of secular society rubbing off on you, I refer you back to James 1:27 and to such passages as Deuteronomy 17:17a and 7:3-4, Nehemiah 13:25 and others. These passages mostly refer to taking foreign wives. Why is it prohibited? It is because their gods and idols would lead the husbands and sons “from following Me to serve other gods.” In addition, worldly practices and lifestyles have the effect of opposing Christ-likeness and righteousness.

I have also observed for several years attempts by churches to combat the negative influences of Halloween by one of two well-intentioned means: Trunk-or-Treat and Fall Festivals. They cross denominational and geographic lines. I know that their motives are probably pure. They know children and parents are going to be out that night and they want to offer them an alternative. That’s good on the surface or in theory, but in practice the outcome is quite different. Either the dates and times are changed to another day, which negates the chance of having people on church grounds on the 31st (thereby nullifying the original intent). Or they are only actually having a sort of “Halloween at Church” event. Either way, we’re just putting a church spin on an evil and pagan, ungodly practice. Worse yet, we’re joining “Christ to Belial” (see 2 Corinthians 6:15). We are engaging in combat but not getting the victory!

Some of us might reason that we don’t want our children to feel left out of what seems or looks like a fun practice or celebration. And to adults, it’s “cute” with the kids and the costumes and the candy. I am sure many of your children would ask you this question if you didn’t allow them to participate: Why can’t we do it like all the other kids? And you, as a parent, don’t want them to miss out or have them feel like they’re missing out because they’ve done something wrong. That might well be the child’s perception.

However, I submit to us all that the Lord is loving and merciful. And that He is all about blessing, fun and prosperity within the bounds of holiness. How do we handle this matter? We instruct our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4) from their birth through adulthood. We explain to them that Christians are different, but not better than the world around them. This might even lead into a discussion about the Gospel and evangelism to family and friends and neighbors. All through the Bible we are instructed to “train up the child in the way he should go,” “these words that I command you this day shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children…” and others. Christians are set apart, we are God’s possession, we are chosen and called out. They need to know this even before they are of an age of sufficient cognizance towards forgiveness and salvation. We are already born into sin with a contrary nature; do we need to poison our children any more by allowing them to take part in things which are unpleasing to the Father? Not if we love them.

By the way, there are many feasts and times of joy, eating and celebration in the Bible that the Lord, Himself, has approved of and initiated for us! Let’s learn of these, get acquainted with our Judeo-Christian history and roots, and partake in ways which are pleasing to God; such as the Feast of Passover, the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of First Fruits, the Feast of Weeks, Rosh Hashanah, the Feast of Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), the Feast of Tabernacles, etc. They can celebrate their difference and uniqueness in ways that the world cannot and should not until they come to know the Lord. These are times for God’s children to have fun!
Further, if we allow our children to partake in Halloween or Easter (with the bunny and eggs that take away from the glory of the resurrection) for any length of time and then we stop, how will we explain to our children when they inevitably ask us, “Daddy, Mommy, if it’s not good, why did you let us do it in the first place?” So, brothers and sisters, pastors and deacons, elders and friends, family and neighbors—as long as it is called today, let us affirm our love for Christ and our children by letting this year of 2014 be the last year we participate in Easter, Halloween or any other false, worldly, contrary celebration in the grace and power of God Almighty! God bless you.

“The Lord of Hosts” (a Lesson for Peter, Gehazi and Us)

When we feel overcome, outnumbered, defeated, alone or weak, we need to understand and take FULL comfort in what this phrase means! In order to do this, we need to do two things:  One, we need to know what is meant by the word “hosts.” We know what “the Lord” means, but what is this word that tells us what He is Lord of? Two, we need to look at it in the contexts it is used and found.

HOSTS is both a Hebraic term and a Greek term as well. This means we find it in both the Old Testament AND the New Testament. Their meanings are almost the same, but with a slight difference, and it’s necessary to know both in order to get a complete understanding and a proper, full definition of it. The Hebrew word tells us it is plural for “army.” And army in this sense means an army of angels—heavenly beings under Almighty God’s command, trained to do battle spiritually and physically. Further, according to the Greek usage it signifies a MULTITUDE, a THRONG, a LIMITLESS company, an UNCOUNTABLE number or amount.

Though the specific word is not used here, the concept is expressed very practically and emphatically. The Lord JESUS says in Matthew 26: 52-53, “Then Jesus said unto him (Peter), ‘Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father (the Commander of Hosts), and He will not at once send MORE THAN TWELVE LEGIONS OF ANGELS?’” Some very descriptive words to take notice of and what they convey are appeal (ask, reach out to), commander (Lord, supreme in rank, authority), more than (emphatic, beyond a specified amount) and 12 legions of angels (a legion was around 6,000 soldiers in the Roman army). So, Jesus was saying He could immediately summon at least 72,000 angels to aid Him if He needed them, in the literal sense. In a figurative sense, under Augustus, the army he had jurisdiction over was up to 168,000 and Jesus was indicating that He could gather more than half of the Roman army on a whim and in an instant. The people of His time knew full well how many that was and how significant that was. In reality and in power, the Savior was commander over ALL the angels, the myriad, the limitless, the uncountable army. So, we should take GREAT comfort and rejoice in the fact that this same supreme commander (Lord of Hosts) is “ON OUR SIDE!”

Perhaps a more revealing and more comforting and more personal account of this power, as it pertains to mere men (but God’s people) is found in 2 Kings 6: 8-17. The wonder of this account is concisely revealed in verses 16 and 17, but the context is paramount and helps us to see the glory of it all as well as several key points that need to be highlighted. The historical and biblical record says, “Once when the King of Syria was warring against Israel, he took counsel with his servants, saying, ‘At such and such a place will be my camp.’ But the man of God (the prophet Elisha) sent word to the King of Israel, ‘Beware that you do not pass this place, for the Syrians are going down there.’ And the King of Israel sent to the place about which the man of God told him. Thus, he used to warn him so that he saved himself more than once or twice (indicating God is on our side). And the mind of the King of Syria was greatly troubled because of this thing, and he called his servants and said to them, ‘Will you not show me who of us is for the King of Israel?’ And one of his servants said, ‘None, my lord, O King; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the King of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom’ (indicating God is omniscient). And he said, ‘Go and see where he is, that I may seize him.’ It was told him, ‘Behold, he is in Dothan.’ So, he sent there horses and chariots and a great army, and they came by night and surrounded the city. When the servant (Gehazi) of the man of God (Elisha) rose early in the morning and went out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was all around the city. And the servant said, ‘Alas, my master! What shall we do?’ He said, ‘Do not be afraid, for THOSE WHO ARE WITH US (outnumber) ARE MORE THAN THOSE WHO ARE WITH THEM’ (again, God is on our side and He is Emmanuel, God With Us and He is THE LORD OF HOSTS). Then Elisha prayed and said (appealed to God Almighty, the Lord of Hosts; just like Jesus in Gethsemane), ‘O, Lord, please open his eyes that he may see.’ So, the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, THE MOUNTAIN (around or behind the city and the army in the city sent by the King of Syria) WAS FULL OF HORSES AND CHARIOTS OF FIRE (indicating the Lord’s presence) ALL AROUND ELISHA (and Gehazi).”

Take notice that we said in the beginning, a word of focus was “hosts” in the phrase “Lord of Hosts” and that it means the plural. We learned “host” in the singular means army. Army means not just angels to be commanded by Jesus—the Captain of the army—but that it means a MULTITUDE, a MYRIAD, a THRONG, a LIMITLESS and UNCOUNTABLE number, but He is the Lord of Hosts/ Armies…plural! So as VAST as one army is, He is the Lord over several or many… much, much, more! That is one reason that Jesus, being ONE, was able to cast out ALL the DEMONS the man in the graveyard had; the speaking demon said his name was “Legion, for we are many.” And in Joshua 23:10 it says, “One man of you puts to flight a thousand, SINCE IT IS THE LORD YOUR GOD WHO FIGHTS FOR YOU, just as He promised you.”

The historical story of Hannah is the first time in the Bible that the phrase “Lord of Hosts” is written and recorded and used by God. So I asked myself, “Why would one woman, distressed, crying out because she wanted a son so badly, address her God as “the Lord of Hosts”? That seemed weird to me. Then the Father gave me three reasons disguised as questions in order to make me think:

  • Is it because, though You are Lord of the uncountable, limitless and multitude, You care for the individual? (Your Word tells us You know the number of hairs on our head, that two sparrows are sold for only a penny and yet not one will fall to the ground without Your knowledge, that You leave the 99 sheep to go in search of the one that is lost)
  • Is it because You want us to have the boldness to approach You on Your throne?
  • Is it because we, Your saints, are PART OF YOUR ARMY?

Psalm 46:6-10 emphasizes Your sovereignty, power, trustworthiness and care over us, “The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; He utters His voice, the earth melts. THE LORD OF HOSTS IS WITH US; THE GOD OF JACOB IS OUR FORTRESS. Come, behold the works of the Lord, how He has brought desolations on the earth. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth; He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the chariots with fire. ‘Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!’ THE LORD OF HOSTS IS WITH US; THE GOD OF JACOB IS OUR FORTRESS.”

Romans 8:31 reaffirms His love for us and why we should trust Him, “IF GOD IS FOR US, WHO CAN BE AGAINST US?”

Since He is The Lord of Hosts, of angel armies, is Emmanuel (God with us), is the Lord of the multitudes, of the throngs, of the hordes, of the myriad, of the legions… then we should SEE AND KNOW like Gehazi, that “more are with us than those that are with them,” and we have victory, no loss, no fear, confidence, gratitude, safety, comfort, peace, joy and a SURE HOPE!

As I prayed fervently and sincerely for Him to speak His Truth clearly, the kind of Truth that cuts through all the water and sugar that muddles it so often through human attempts to speak it without unction or power, this admonition is what HE spoke to me and wants us to consider carefully along with the encouragement we have just received:  We all like the idea and the comfort of knowing “the God of angel armies is always by our side,” but are we committed to, devoted to, and attentive TO HIM, “The Lord—the Commander—of Hosts” in the same way? What if God were to change the words around like this: “The angel armies (hosts) of God are always BY HIS SIDE?” Do we take just as much pleasure, joy, confidence and comfort when it is turned around on us? Does the soldier obey and follow the commander as much as the commander leads, guides and protects those under His command?

The Lord of Hosts—of which you are one—bless and keep you. Amen.

HE Can BE Trusted… EXPLICITLY!

I am VERY excited to pass on to you what God has very freshly passed on to me! Please forgive me, as my understanding is fresh and my sharing of it may be raw, but I want to get it down on paper and out to you while it is still ripening—and isn’t faded by what I might not be able to rightly retain, apart from the Lord!

I rarely, rarely read anything other than Scripture anymore; I prefer the Source, the Bible itself. It’s just SO much better, purer, stronger and truer. But I have begun to read a book about the life of a saint (a man of God as the Bible puts it, not a venerated Catholic man or woman) named George Müller. And I want to be clear that I am not elevating the man. I elevate and exalt Jesus Christ, and Him alone! He alone is worthy! However, I am clear in my conscience and before Almighty God who knows my heart that my purpose in reading the book is to learn from God by becoming familiar with what He did in this man’s life, that He may hopefully do the same in me as well. That’s it. It’s because, over the course of my born-again life, I have heard of him a few times—enough to take notice of and remember that his name was always mentioned in association with a great life of prayer and faith that the LORD did in and through him.

I have a good, rich, and habitual prayer life in terms of personal communion with and devotion to my heavenly Father, Savior and Holy Spirit as well as occasional intercession for others, especially those whom He puts on my heart. However, in these times we find ourselves—the last and particularly wicked days—there have been many inward and outward calls for paramount, effective, intentional prayer! So, my finally ordering the book and having some time off to dive into it (though not nearly finishing it yet) is both the end of my procrastination and the right time and hour to fully embrace it, so that my heart and soul can live it out from this day forward, with the Lord’s grace and help.

This morning as I was reading the sixth chapter (it did not take preeminence to my anticipatory time with my Lord Jesus), the book was talking about God’s faithfulness. It mentioned, specifically, 2 Timothy 2:13 which says, “If we deny Him, He will also deny us; if we are faithless, HE REMAINS FAITHFUL—for He cannot deny Himself.” This is from the Holy and Sacred Bible, God’s true Word to us. As a testimony to Brother Müller, it is attested to in the book as saying through the writer of this, sort-of, biography of faith and prayer that, (alluding to Hebrews 6:13) “GOD HAS NOT ONLY SPOKEN, BUT SWORN; HIS WORD IS CONFIRMED BY AN OATH:  because He could swear by no greater, He swore by Himself. And all this that we might have a strong consolation; that we might have boldness in venturing upon Him, laying hold and holding fast His promise.” Here is the part that the Lord God used to arrest my attention. It says further, “UNBELIEF MAKES GOD A LIAR AND, WORSE STILL, A PERJURER FOR IT ACCOUNTS HIM AS NOT ONLY FALSE TO HIS WORD, BUT TO HIS OATH.” Whoa! (and Woe!) This is one of those onion-layer moments from the Word.

By this time, my wife was sitting on the couch (not far from me in my chair) diving into some intercessory prayer work that the Spirit of God has recently called her deeper into, although she was already quite good at it. I read it aloud to her and she asked me to repeat it. Immediately, the Lord explained to both of us simultaneously but through my mouth, what this truly meant and what great significance it has. Once again, while fresh and raw, let me try to explain it to you. Lord God, I give and surrender my mind, hand and tongue to You. I barely know it myself and even if I did fully comprehend it, it came from You!

Again, from Jehovah to Müller to the writer of the book to me and to you, it says, “Unbelief makes God a liar and, worse still, a perjurer, for it accounts Him as NOT ONLY FALSE TO HIS WORD, BUT TO HIS OATH.” What does this mean? I color-coded it in hopes it would solidify the pairing of the two sets of words in your mind. First of all, many people would equate lying with perjuring; in other words, that they mean exactly the same thing. That’s not quite true. They are very similar but there is an important nuance that sets them apart—and we need to understand it, as it relates perfectly to Almighty God’s nature, unblemished character and FAITHFULNESS. A lie is an untrue statement, simply stated. Anyone and everyone can and does lie, both intentionally and unintentionally. God can’t and doesn’t, ever. It is impossible for Him to do so (Hebrews 6:18, 1 John 1:5). It is a common occurrence for man and happens in the world every day. But in the COURTROOM where you must swear, vow, make a covenant and take an oath in front of a judge, jury, court officers, attorneys, AND while putting your hand on the Bible (no coincidence!) and raising your right hand in the air as a testimony to the validity and accuracy of your witness; in this setting a lie takes on a whole other meaning. The bar, in effect, has been raised. There are no longer any of what the world would like to consider as shades of gray. Everything is either black or white, true or false. And if your testimony is found to be false and unreliable, it is called “PERJURY”—lying under oath. According to the website www.criminaldefenselawyer.com, “a person convicted of perjury under federal law may face up to five years in prison and fines. The punishment for perjury under state law varies from state to state, but perjury is a felony” (a crime, more serious than a misdemeanor) “and carries a possible prison sentence of at least one year, plus fines and probation.” This takes the seriousness of lying to a whole other level as well—and it should; a court of law is the pinnacle of justice for mankind, in the natural sense.

With God, the stakes are even higher. Why? Because He Himself is Truth. As we stated earlier, it is impossible for Him to lie. HIS COURT has eternal outcomes, not temporary ones. And, most importantly, He is not simply a witness taking the stand and offering His testimony under a VOW of truthfulness and faithfulness. HE IS THE JUDGE! So, to make Him a liar and a perjurer by not taking Him at His word (suggesting He is unfaithful) represents a serious CRIME ON OUR PART. That crime is UNBELIEF. This is one reason the Bible says in Hebrews 11:6, “And without faith it is impossible to please Him…” And from all of this we can better understand, and more fully appreciate, the truth and weight of what verse one of the same chapter conveys when it tells us, “faith is the EVIDENCE of things unseen…” Evidence is strong testimony. It is concrete, and carries more weight with a jury or judge than some witnesses do.

You may have often heard unbelievers—even vocal opponents of the Christian faith—refer to or insist that faith is intangible. They often say it is a “blind” faith. How untrue and very telling a statement of a complete lack of understanding (and oftentimes a willing ignorance) of what true faith is. To them faith is a hoping, a wishing, a crossing-of-the-fingers, a “belief” in the unknown or what they deem unprovable or unknowable, especially by the worldly “absolute” (and I use that term loosely) of science. Science is well and good, but is not the standard, measuring stick, or plum line of true absolutes or the end-all/ be-all for believing. The Bible accurately asserts that faith is the evidence or assurance of the unseen. Combine this definitive truth from God’s inerrant Word with the following chain links in the book which describe and proclaim from observable and measurable experience in the life of someone who “walked with God.” It conveys what I and every genuine believer know to be true. He BELIEVED; and because he believed, he PRAYED; and because he prayed, he EXPECTED; and because he expected, he RECEIVED.  THE LESSON IS THAT GOD IS FAITHFUL, STEADFAST AND TRUE—ALWAYS!  To have faith in who He is and what He says and what He does proceeds from His oath, His testimony. If we don’t take God at His word, we make Him both a liar and a perjurer. And this is why the Bible says in Romans 14:13 “For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin.”

Another verse that fits hand-in-glove with this truth and principle is 1 John 1:5. If you are a believer—a CHRISTian—and you don’t yet know this verse, you should have it imprinted in your mind and engraved on your heart. It says this, “And this is the confidence we have toward Him, that if we ask anything ACCORDING TO HIS WILL, He will hear us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we KNOW that we have the requests that we have asked of Him.”  Since the Father is faithful and true—and to say or believe otherwise is to make Him not only a liar, but a perjurer—then rather than doubt the validity of the Bible, we should approach it as both absolutely truthful and completely authoritative. Don’t approach your dealings with Him from unbelief—as if He can’t be trusted—but from belief. Otherwise, there can be no relationship. And any and all kinds of associations are, at least initially, based on a measure of trust. They have to be or else we’re dead in the water. Don’t approach the One true God, the Creator of all things, the Author of life, the Savior and Redeemer of the human soul who formed you and gave you the breath of life and who sustains you from moment to moment, as though what He says isn’t true or that He isn’t worthy of our utmost confidence. Search your heart honestly and vulnerably to find out the motive, the real reason for your unbelief and confess it.

As a newborn baby comes into the world completely dependent upon those who have been charged and blessed with nurturing, feeding, caring for and protecting him or her, so we too must be completely dependent upon our heavenly Father to care for us. Can you imagine coming into this world and NOT entrusting yourself to those who love you and played a part in your birth? What would you do? Where would you go? Would you fend for yourself?  Of course not! Then why intentionally attempt to live your life without the unconditional love, protection, guidance, grace, provision and providence of your Maker, fully reliant upon Him and with full certitude in Him? At the absolute very least, enter into the relationship with trust and confidence, rather than unfounded doubt and fear. Take Him who cannot lie at His Word, walk with Him step-by-step, hold His hand tightly, and follow and obey Him where He leads. The reward you will enjoy of KNOWING the God of the universe will lead you to the forgiveness of your sins (because, in His love for you, He will convict you) and the salvation of your eternal soul, if you will let Him. You will see life and not death. You will be made clean from your filth. You will have joy and peace and hope in place of hardness of heart, conflict and despair. We don’t deserve it and we can’t earn it, but He is willing to give it and has MADE THE WAY POSSIBLE THROUGH THE LORD JESUS CHRIST! That’s the Good News! And it’s amazing grace!

Embrace the love and trust in Him!

God bless you.

Your Stumbling Block is Also Your Treasure

The thing you tripped over was put there on purpose and it has great value.

Matthew 13:44 shares this truth, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then, in his joy, he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”

Imagine you are out walking somewhere and you stumble on something protruding from the ground. You look to see what you tripped on, perhaps to move it so that someone else who comes after you won’t do the same. Upon closer inspection, you see that it is a small, wooden box. Out of curiosity, you open it and see a bunch of gold coins. When you count them, you see that their value is a million dollars! The land where you were walking was undeveloped, so you decide to find out how much the field is worth to see if you can afford to buy it because, in order to lay claim to and possess the treasure, you have to possess the land where it was hidden and found.

So you go to City Hall, tell them you’re interested in buying that lot, and you find out it sells for $10,000. The problem is you don’t have that kind of money. Who does? Maybe you don’t even make that much. You begin to see how valuable that field is just by virtue of what it contains, so you start thinking about how you can get the money together (the $10K) in order to obtain the treasure (the $1M). You look in the garage and figure you can probably sell your lawnmower for $200, but you need much, much more! Now, the things like your bed and furniture and TV that you used to think you couldn’t do without before suddenly seem like a small price to pay in order to gain that which has far greater value.

You sell all of those things and more but, including the lawnmower, you’ve only managed to scrape together about $3,000. You’re still far short of your goal. So, you start to reassess what you thought was necessary and very valuable to you and what you thought you couldn’t do without. After all, when you’re getting rid of something you think has worth to you it suddenly loses its worth when compared to something that is worth much, much, much more. You now have nothing left but your car. You think about how it’s reliable, it’s in good shape, it doesn’t have that many miles, it’s almost paid off and you need it to get back and forth to work. You need it to make money, pay your bills, get groceries and so much more. You can’t possibly part with that. It’s just not practical and it doesn’t seem to make sense.

But then you realize none of that matters because you do your research and find out that you can sell your car at fair market value for $7K. Maybe you think you can get more for it but, if you sell it, and combine that money with the cash you got for the mower, TV, computer, bed, furniture and everything else you had, you now have the $10K that you need to buy the land and, more importantly, to be able to lay claim to the $1 MILLION! Then you also realize that once you have the treasure, the far greater amount, you can, if needed, go back and buy the other things—better and newer than the ones you had before. But those things are not even important now because, in the process of buying the field which holds the treasure, you have discovered their real value—or LACK of value—those items really had. They PALE in comparison to what you stumbled over.

JESUS IS TELLING US IN JUST ONE VERSE WITH JUST 34 WORDS WHAT REALLY MATTERS AND LASTS ETERNALLY, VERSUS WHAT DOESN’T REALLY MATTER AT ALL AND LASTS FOR ONLY A VERY SHORT TIME.

When you now reexamine your life and reassess what you think is important to you and what you think you can’t live without, now that HE has allowed you to stumble over the rock (Jesus, the kingdom of God, forgiveness of sins, the salvation of your soul, eternal life) in the field which is your life, you should have NO problem eliminating from your life the things you need to get rid of, and stop focusing on, and spending too much time with (including people) in order to obtain the treasure of infinitely more value and worth!

In Matthew 19: 16-22 the Lord Jesus Christ is approached by who the Bible describes as a “rich, young, ruler.” That passage says this, “And behold, a man came up to Him, saying, ‘Teacher, what good deed must I do to inherit eternal life?’ And He said to him, ‘Why do you ask Me about what is good? There is only One who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.’ He said to Him, ‘Which ones?’ And Jesus said, ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness, honor your father and mother, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ The young man said to Him, ‘All these I have kept. What do I still lack?’ Jesus said to him, ‘If you would be perfect, GO SELL WHAT YOU POSSESS and give to the poor, and YOU WILL HAVE TREASURE IN HEAVEN; and, come, follow Me.’ When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.”

He, the young man, was TALKING WITH THE TREASURE in the field. He was IN THE PRESENCE OF THE MUCH GREATER VALUE, yet placed more worth in his bed, TV, phone, computer, clothes, furniture and car (the $10K). So, he didn’t sell them in order to buy the field to lay claim to the $1MILLION. How foolish and how short-sighted! And, as a result, the Word of God says “he went away SORROWFUL.”

The Bible also refers to the Savior of the world and of your personal world as “a stumbling block.” He is the treasure in the field that, at some point, you will trip over. Romans 9:33 says, “Behold, I am laying in Zion a Stone of Stumbling, and a Rock of Offense; and whoever believes (TRUSTS) in Him will not be put to shame.” You can personalize it like this, “Behold, I am laying in this field which is your life a stumbling block of great worth and value, but to you it will seem offensive because it is convicting to you (allows you to see and feel guilty over your sin) and seems to you to stand in the way of what you think holds value and importance; but if you find your treasure in HIM by eliminating from your life the things which are of immensely less worth, buy the field with your faith, lay hold of the treasure you have stumbled upon of immensely greater worth by repenting of your sins and making HIM Lord of your life, you will not be ashamed of the Gospel which has saved your soul and washed away your sins because “it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes (trusts in Him).”

Sell what you have, buy the field, take hold of the treasure. His name is JESUS CHRIST!

God bless you.

“You Want to Expand Your Borders; I Will Send Fire”

Hi again friends, brothers and sisters! The Spirit of the Lord has been putting a couple of concepts on my mind and heart lately, first one and then another. They go together and help to explain some massive societal problems that we all need to understand. There will, almost undoubtedly, be more to come or maybe they are already here and I’m just unaware of them. But as large-scale as they are and as foreign to your heart as they may seem, each and every one of us needs to ask Jesus Christ to make us aware of issues, attitudes and mindsets in our own individual lives that parallel what I am about to share with you. I hope that you will listen, not just as if I’m talking about someone else, but as if the Lord is talking into your heart and life as well.

There’s no soft or nice way to say this, so I’ll just the drop the truth bomb the way the Father laid it out:  LGBTQ and BLACK LIVES MATTER are two heads of the same monster… and its name is REBELLION. (As a matter of act, since beginning to type this, the Lord has shown me that PLANNED PARENTHOOD and ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION could easily be seen as a third and fourth head of this same monster). Additionally, the Lord led me to read the Book of Amos beginning with a verse I heard or someone shared with me recently. That verse is Amos 7:14, but it is verses 12-13 that capture the heart of what we’re getting into together today. They say, “And Amaziah said to Amos, ‘O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, and eat bread there, and prophesy there, but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.’” This is a typical response to the Word of the Lord sent as a warning to a sinning and sinful people. They can’t bear the conviction and truth it brings. They won’t repent and be saved, and so they send God’s servant away. Instead, they surround themselves with people who say pleasant things that they would rather hear because they don’t have to change the way they live. They pass up the chance at salvation, and close their ears to the reality of death that will face them later. Maybe this describes you. Maybe you are trying to expand your borders, just as LGBTQ and BLM are but in a smaller and to a subtler degree.

Then the Spirit brought me to the following series of disturbing verses which parallel what these organizations are doing and the just consequence that will come as a result (and this can be just as true for your life as well). Throughout chapter one and the beginning of chapter two, there are seven cities or people groups who the Lord God directly addresses. He declares to them, clearly and one at a time, telling them what He will do and why (but in reverse order) and then there is an overarching reason and a revealing of the motive of the heart that lies behind all of it.

Amos 1:3 says (speaking of Damascus), “Because they have threshed Gilead.”

Amos 1:4 says, “So I WILL SEND A FIRE upon the house of Hazael.”

Amos 1:6 says (speaking of Gaza), “Because they carried into exile a whole people to deliver them up to Edom.”

Amos 1:7 says, “So I WILL SEND A FIRE upon the wall of Gaza.”

Amos 1:9 says (speaking of Tyre), “Because they delivered up a whole people to Edom.”

Amos 1:10 says, “So I WILL SEND A FIRE upon the wall of Tyre.”

Amos 1:11 says (speaking of Edom), “Because he pursued his brother with the sword.”

Amos 1:12 says, “So I WILL SEND A FIRE upon Teman.”

Amos 1:13 says (speaking of the Ammonites), “Because they have ripped open pregnant women in Gilead that they might enlarge their border.”

Amos 1:14 says, “So I WILL KINDLE A FIRE in the wall of Rabbah.”

Amos 2:1 says (speaking to Moab), “Because he burned to lime the bones of the king of Edom.”

Amos 2:2 says, “So I WILL KINDLE A FIRE upon Moab.”

Amos 2:4 says (speaking to Judah), “Because they have rejected the Law of the Lord and have not kept His statutes.”

Amos 2:5 says, “So I WILL SEND A FIRE upon Judah.”

LGBTQ is lawless not just because of their inborn sin (1 John 3:4, Romans 1:32) but because they demand that others not only tolerate but accept their rebellion. They want equal “rights,” non-discrimination (as they see it, they want the right to sin), to be allowed to “marry”, to be accepted without repentance, to be able to change their identity, to use restrooms/changing rooms/locker rooms of the opposite sex, to invent genders (when there are only two), to compete unfairly and with unfair physical advantages against the opposite sex in athletics and competitions, want to be referred to with invented/odd/unnatural pronouns, and demand laws to be changed or established to their liking. Worst of all is that they are corrupting the church. We welcome all who turn from their sin and are cleansed by the blood of Jesus, as we have been. However, they want to remain in their sin and still be called by the holy name of Christ, “Christians.” This cannot be. Christ is not coming for a blemished church, nor did He suffer on the Cross for someone who refuses to repent, and to remain sinful. THEY WANT TO ENLARGE THEIR BORDERS.

BLACK LIVES MATTER is lawless not just because of their inborn sin, but because they want to resist authority, push against those who enforce the laws they knowingly break, and they act as if they are the victims when they receive their consequences and, sometimes, due rewards. Often the individuals they are defending or heralding as recipients of undue justice have made a series of bad choices which led to their eventual demise. If they had made a different one, or not made the initial choice (which led to another and then another), they would have escaped their end. But instead of looking within, admitting their guilt, acknowledging their own responsibility and accountability in the matter, they blame those who enforce the very laws that they have knowingly and purposefully broken. It is not racism. It is not racial profiling. It is a matter of wanting to do whatever they want with impunity and then crying foul when they are held accountable for their own actions. And they, too, want everyone to sympathize with them. They, too, want to change laws, change street names, change brand names of products to help bolster their cause. They want us to accept and tolerate their behavior. But that’s not justice. That’s societal acquiescence. When they organize and protest, chaos and destruction follow. I understand the felt need to raise your voice when you think no one is listening or paying attention—I really do. But when it is taken to this level, it will only be met with resistance. They may or may not be the ones looting, vandalizing or setting fires, but they are not pushing them away either. If they want to be heard and for the lawful ones to take them seriously, they should be vocal (they don’t have a problem with this!) and be the first ones to make it known to the world that the ones who do that are not from them. They should condemn these actions and separate themselves from the ones who do so. When they do not, the watching world can only presume it is acceptable to them. THEY WANT TO ENLARGE THEIR BORDERS.

THE LORD JESUS CHRIST WILL DO AS HE SAID IN AMOS 1:4, 1:7, 1:10, 1:12, 1:14, 2:2 AND 2:5. “I WILL SEND A FIRE UPON THEM.” The purpose is to purify.

As much as we would like to believe, we are not in control—nor should we be. We are full of sin and it is evident. We do not possess righteousness. We do not possess, it seems, the capability to govern our own individual lives well, let alone the lives of others. We cannot force or impose our wills on others. Almighty God is authority; the supreme authority. He is also our Creator, our Lawgiver and our Judge. Before Him we will stand and give an account of our deeds and, more importantly, our motives. As Romans 13:1-7 so perfectly, clearly and succinctly spells out, God is the ultimate authority; it begins and ends with Him. And He has appointed ministers (His servants) to rule over us:  parents, grandparents, teachers, employers, police and government. When we disobey and rebel against any or all of these—and they serve, are sent and are established by Him—we disobey and rebel against HIM. It is the exact same and that’s what the Word of God tells us. This should give us a wake-up call in our souls. Of course, this can be very revealing about the heart of a man or woman. It says that since we have no fear of the Almighty, then it just stands to reason we will not fear or respect those who serve as His proxies, or representatives, over us. The Lord Jesus Christ would say it like this, “If you do not fear those who you can see, then you will not fear HIM who you can’t see.”

The Word of God is Truth and it proclaims that “the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.” Just the beginning. It is like the first day of school. The Bible also says that if we have no wisdom, we are fools. Folly (or, foolishness) is the opposite of wisdom. In that same passage from the book of Romans it WARNS US, “Do you want to have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is right (and good, not in your own eyes but according to the law) and you will receive his approval… but if you do what is wrong (unlawful), BE AFRAID, for he does not bear the sword in vain.” In other words, the one who has the charge and responsibility to enforce the law, has been given the sword (handcuffs, club, gun, taser) for the very purpose of keeping order. There’s a reason he’s been given the sword or gun. Of course, if none of this even matters to you, then you are DEEP in sin, lawlessness, rebellion and you stand in –arrogance, pride and hubris—defiance of the God of the Universe! I would NOT want to be in your shoes. The God who made Heaven and Earth and everything in between is not disorderly, haphazard, unruly or chaotic. He rules with equity and justice. He is the universal Lawgiver and the Judge of all mankind. He makes perfect laws, statutes, and decrees which, when submitted to and obeyed, will ensure peace, order, stability, blessing and prosperity. But when we do not submit and obey, He will enforce His laws against the evildoer, the scoffer and the rebellious. This speaks to every human heart because we are born in sin. However, there is a purposeful, intentional, willful and higher degree of disobedience. This stage of rebellion (if that isn’t descriptive enough) rises to the level of revolt or insurrection. But even if it is not violent in outward action, it is most certainly at the heart stage. We only have to look at the fruit, or outward manifestation, of what is hidden deep inside. The Bible very accurately convicts us in Luke 6:45 saying, “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” It can also be said just as truthfully that out of the overflow of a person’s heart, actions of the same will be carried out or manifested. Matthew 7:17 testifies or adds weight to this principle saying, “So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit.” It’s easy to see what kind of trees we ourselves are, and are dealing with in others. We can readily observe the evidence whether it be in us, an anarchistic group’s words and actions or as a collective, global society and race called mankind.

Jesus Christ’s role as the willing, voluntary and sacrificial lamb is over and thankfully accomplished! He is now coming back in power and glory, and as a thief in the night. This doesn’t mean He’s coming back to steal something (since everything belongs to Him, anyway). It signifies He will return at a time when we are not ready and don’t expect. The next time you try to mold him in your mind or heart into someone or something you want Him to be and He is not, consider carefully these words from Revelation 19:11-16 which paint a different portrait than the one you have most likely crafted for yourself, “Then I saw Heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The One sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness HE JUDGES and MAKES WAR. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems, and He has a name written that no one knows but Himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which He is called is The Word of God. And the armies of Heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following Him on white horses. From His mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, King of kings and Lord of Lords.” Since He IS sovereign (1 Timothy 6:15) and rules over all, wants to keep us safe, and knows we need LIMITS—not expanded borders—in order to minimize the collateral damage arising from our sin, He wisely sets up BORDERS for us; even the angels have their “PROPER POSITIONS” (Jude 1:6). Jesus Christ our God and Creator and Master gave limitations to the very first man and woman in charging them concerning what was good to eat and what was not good (acceptable) to eat (Genesis 2:16-17), and as a result of their rebellion (WANTING TO ENLARGE THEIR BORDERS) by not staying within their proper positions, He set yet another boundary over them when He “sent him out of the garden” and “drove out the man, and at the east of the Garden of Eden, He placed the cherubim (angels) and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.”

In the book of Job 38:8-11 He speaks of natural boundaries in these commands, “Or who SHUT IN the sea with doors when it burst forth from the womb, when I made clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling band, and PRESCRIBED LIMITS for it and SET BARS AND DOORS, and said, ‘THUS FAR SHALL YOU COME AND NO FARTHER, and here shall your proud waves BE STAYED?” Proverbs 8:29 speaks again of the vast sea, “When He assigned to the sea it’s LIMIT, so that the waters MIGHT NOT TRANSGRESS HIS COMMAND.” 2 Corinthians 6:14-17 gives several examples of the necessity for sons and daughters of God to be SEPARATED from those who are unbelievers saying, “Do NOT be equally YOKED,” “GO OUT from their midst, and BE SEPARATE from them.” And the Savior Himself describes one of His own divine characteristics as “THE DOOR” twice in John 10:7-9. It tells us, “So Jesus again said to them, ‘Truly, Truly, I say to you, I AM THE DOOR of the sheep. All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I AM THE DOOR. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.’”

We all have and need LIMITS, BORDERS, BOUNDARIES, WALLS, LAWS and HEDGES. The good, submitted, yielding and obedient see them as beneficial, necessary, protective and wisely acknowledge and stay within them. This leads to peace and blessing, and shows our Maker we love and honor Him. But those who wrongly, defiantly, disrespectfully, violently, forcefully and rebelliously spurn, violate and resist good boundaries—whether geographical (illegal immigration), natural and biological (LGBTQ), denying one’s own culpability (Black Lives Matter), or the murder of innocent life out of convenience and for profit (Planned Parenthood)—are, at the very core, SEEKING TO ENLARGE THEIR BORDERS. When we do this, we are not only unlawful (pitting ourselves against the Universal Lawgiver and Judge of our eternal souls), but we encroach upon and burst through others’ boundaries. This is wrong, disorderly, chaotic and a very personal and large-scale example of “breaking and entering.” It’s “theft.” It’s “assault and battery.” It’s “rape.” JESUS CHRIST in His own words, though speaking of the kingdom, illustrates the same attitude and principle with these words in John 10:1, “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber.” He is illuminating and reinforcing the existence of rightfully-placed borders, boundaries, limitations and perimeters. If they are immovable, it is by design and for a reason. God has established them. It should not be attempted to move them, dig under them, go around them or climb over them! This is the sin of Adam and Eve. We are not to be proud, arrogant, stiff-necked, intrusive, shameful, debase, unrighteous, evil, covetous, envious, malicious, haters of God (and His sword-bearing servants), insolent, inventors of evil, foolish, heartless or ruthless. If these walls have gates, if these doors have keys, and if these borders have permissible ingress and egress points, use them properly and legally as set forth and enforced by your authorities. But what can’t be done is to convince yourself in your deceitful and wicked heart (Jeremiah 17:9) that you have done nothing wrong, that you are a victim, an injured party or a casualty, that your feelings carry more weight concerning your identity than the way your Creator made you as evidenced by your biological makeup, that you can illegally trespass into another sovereign country and expect no recompense, or that the sexual walls you have wrongfully scaled and which have now produced life in you—which is a blessing and a loving responsibility— can be considered an inconvenience or a curse to be done away with by a pill or a vacuum, and his or her body parts sold for a profit. This is NOT LAWFUL; it is SHAMEFUL! These are flat-out lies.

If I’m a young child and want to play in the front yard, my father will have already bought a house with a fence in preparation for my ignorance, foolishness and waywardness. He will instruct me to play ball with the gate closed and for me not to kick the ball over the enclosure. But if I ignore his commands and words to keep me safe, and the ball leaves the yard bouncing through the gate I have left open or over the fence, and I run into the street to retrieve it, he can’t guarantee my safety; especially if I follow my own will, decide to disobey his command and go after my own desires. So focused am I on my own intentions, and so purposefully oblivious to his, that I get hit by a passing car. It is ridiculous to blame the driver of the car! I HAVE SO WANTED TO EXPAND MY BORDERS that I have completely ignored the safety protocols put in place by my father, with his love, protection and authority. I need to be humble, acknowledge my own responsibility and accountability in the matter, ask for forgiveness, promise and be intent on never doing it again, and rightly accept the consequences or pain and discipline of healing that come as a result… NOT to  blame my father for having the fence, NOT to blame the driver of the car who hit me only because I left my proper position (even if he may have been driving too fast or not paying enough attention, because if I had never ran out into the street in clear disobedience of the laws and instructions I had been given, I would never have been hit in the first place; the sole responsibility for the outcome and my injury is mine), NOT to blame the physical therapist as he or she “hurts” me in the process of helping me to walk again, etc. etc. You are not the Lawmaker. You are not the Lawgiver. You are not the law enforcer. You are not even the law interpreter. You are to be the law-abiding citizen. Let me remind you of the cause, effect and reason I mentioned in the beginning:

CAUSE= The wrong you have done and your lack of acknowledging your responsibility are the direct result of you not staying within the perfect and protective and authoritative boundaries set for you.

EFFECT= Jesus will SEND A FIRE UPON YOU if you don’t confess and repent of your wrongdoing.

REASON= You were not content or obedient or grateful- YOU WANTED TO EXPAND YOUR BORDERS and you defiantly left your proper position.

May God grant you grace, wisdom, humility, repentance, forgiveness, obedience and gratitude!

Walking with God

Genesis 5: 21-24, “When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah. Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Thus, all the days of Enoch were 365 years. Enoch walked with God, and he was not (found), for God took him.”

Hebrews 11: 5-6, “By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken, he was commended as having pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.”

Genesis 6: 5-9, “The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was ONLY EVIL, CONTINUALLY. And the Lord regretted that He had made man on the earth, and it GRIEVED HIM TO HIS HEART. So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them. But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.” These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.”

Genesis 17: 1-2, “When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, ‘I am God Almighty (El Shaddai), walk before (with) Me and be blameless, that I may make my covenant between Me and you, and may multiply you greatly.”

Exodus 33: 9-11, “When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the Lord would speak with Moses. And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, each at his tent door. Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses FACE TO FACE, as a man speaks to his friend.”

So, the Word has shown us examples of these four men—ENOCH, NOAH, ABRAM AND MOSES—who did what? What is the common thread? They entered into and maintained a close relationship with the Almighty God of the Universe! We see phrases such as “walked with God,” “pleased God,” “found favor in the eyes of the Lord,” “walk with Me and be blameless,” “the Lord would speak to,” and “face to face.” What incredible and descriptive ways to express and communicate a closeness, a relationship and a continual connection between man and His Creator, Lawgiver, Judge, Savior, Redeemer, Lord and God! To think and know and ponder that this is even possible is awesome! What does it take for this to happen?

In the often- and mistakenly-overlooked book of Amos, chapter 3, verse 3 asks an all-important question that gets straight to the heart of the matter: “DO TWO WALK TOGETHER, UNLESS THEY HAVE AGREED TO MEET?” There’s that consistent theme, that THREAD, we have seen mentioned and intentionally pointed-out again and again. What is it? Walk together.

Question: What does this mean? We first have to understand the phrase before we can decide to do it, especially if our entire, never-ending, eternity depends on it!

To walk is to TAKE CONTINUAL STEPS. To walk together, then, means to take continual steps WITH ANOTHER person.

(Remember, we discussed and came to the paramount understanding last week that being a “person” is not limited to being a human being. We only think this way because we are the only kind of all of God’s creation that meets these criteria: having the ability to reason, to think logically, to be self-aware, to have an intelligence beyond that of mere animals and insects, to have an independent and voluntary will and volition. We think of ourselves as being the sole beings obtaining this personhood status because, in the created universe—especially on Earth—we are. But just as Genesis 5:3 tells us that Adam fathered a son in his own likeness and after his own image, we too were made in the image of Almighty God. So, He is a person also. Again, remember that there is One God in three persons:  Father, Son, Holy Spirit.)

Let’s look at AMOS 3:3 a little closer and hone in on three necessary elements to being able to WALK WITH GOD. BUT, let’s be very diligent to remember that walking with God does not in any way make us equal with God! We know this, but when we think, speak and act independently of Him, rather than dependently on Him, we are in essence putting ourselves in that wrongful place and doing just what it warns in Jude: 6, “And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, He has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day.”

AGREE:  We have to BE IN AGREEMENT WITH JESUS. Sin separates us from Him; not just the sin we do, but the sin we are born with. We think we are “basically good,” we “compare ourselves with others” rather than comparing ourselves with His perfect standard. We have to AGREE WITH GOD that we are sinful. (Need a couple of reminders? Romans 3:10 says, “None is righteous, no, not one.” And Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”)

MEET:  When we realize and admit and are genuinely sorrowful for our sins, realize our need for cleansing in our innermost being, and want forgiveness, we can change our minds and thinking (exercise our free will) and we TURN AWAY FROM OUR OLD WAYS AND TURN TO GOD. (2 Corinthians 7: 9-11 says, “For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us. For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. For you see what earnestness this godly grief has produced in you, but also what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what punishment! At every point you have proved yourselves innocent in the matter.” REPENTANCE is a necessary second step to walking with God. A very good definition is: “A call to persons to make a radical turn away from one way of life to another. It calls for a personal, absolute, and ultimate unconditional surrender to God as sovereign.”)

In the original language of Hebrew and Aramaic, the interesting thing is that there is one word, “Yaad”, that it takes two words (Agree, Meet) in English to properly convey or explain. YAAD means to assemble, gather, to appoint (a time and place), make an appointment, meet together, and designate. This is great and very accurate because it takes both a DESIRE TO AGREE and a decision TO MEET in order to get to a place where TWO CAN WALK TOGETHER. Do you see that? You could actually write it and visualize it like this:  Agree + Meet = Walk.

WALK:  This Hebrew/ Aramaic word is “Halak.” It is understood as accompany, come near, continually follow, proceed, go forth. So, we must come in agreement with what the Lord teaches us about our sin problem, that we need to be cleansed from that and to be REBORN into new creations. When that happens truthfully, we are then in a condition where we can actually meet with our Maker to be restored to that “likeness” and “made in His image” that God originally intended for us to be, and just like Adam fathered Seth in his image. Once these steps are established, we can now WALK WITH GOD because our natures that were opposed to Him and were His enemies, are now in agreement with His ways rather than our own. We are no longer in rebellion to Him doing what we WANT rather than what HE COMMANDS AND DESIRES. We are now in unison with Him.

But another interesting thing to note, appreciate and give overwhelming thanks for is that HE INITIATED THIS. God Almighty, Jesus Christ whom we nailed to the cross and killed by our sins, has yet offered to and AGREED with Himself (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) to MEET with us first—Romans 5: 8 says, “God shows His love for us in that while WE WERE STILL SINNERS, Christ died for us.” These astounding acts pave the Way for Him and Us to walk together for all of eternity! Hallelujah! This is THE GOSPEL! The is the GOOD NEWS!

PSALM 139: 1-18!!! He is worthy of all praise and thanksgiving!

How Should I See Myself? (“What I Have Written, I Have Written”)

If you are unsaved, your estimation of yourself is (most likely or often) higher than God’s estimation of you.

If you are born-again, God’s estimation of you is (most likely or often) higher than your estimation of yourself.

John 19: 14-22, “Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.  There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”  Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek.  So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’”  Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”

  • God Almighty ESTABLISHED Jesus’ identity: “(This is) Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews”
  • It was made plain for ALL TO SEE: Pilate wrote an inscription and put it on the Cross. Many of the Jews read this inscription for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city
  • God Almighty made sure EVERYONE KNEW Jesus’ identity: It was written in Aramaic/ Hebrew (all the common people knew, spoke and understood it), in Latin (all of the occupying Romans—from the soldiers to the Emperor, Caesar—knew it), and in Greek (all the Hellenists; the Greek-speaking and educated Jews knew it)
  • Others DIDN’T WANT TO RECOGNIZE Him for what He was: The chief priests told Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ only write this man said, ‘I am King of the Jews”
  • His identity was FIRM and FOREVER, and could not, would NOT BE CHANGED: Pilate answered them, “What I have written, I have written.”

Before we can understand and appreciate our transformation (if it has yet occurred) and glorify Him, we must know and be reminded of who we really are, who we are without Him.

  1. We are not anything beautiful, handsome or wonderful of ourselves. Isaiah 53: 2 even speaks of the MAN Jesus this way, “He had no form or majesty that we should look at Him, and no beauty that we should desire Him.”
  2. We are a MIST that appears for a LITTLE WHILE and VANISHES (James 4: 14)
  3. Our days ARE LIKE GRASS; we flourish like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and IT IS GONE, and its place knows it NO MORE (Psalm 103: 15-16)
  4. We were not only born in sin, but conceived in sin as well (Psalm 51: 5)

We only find our worth, value and beauty in Him, when we are CLEANSED, REBORN and TRANSFORMED!

  1. “And He who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new” (This includes us if we have been regenerated) (Revelation 21: 5)
  2. “If anyone is IN CHRIST, He is a NEW CREATION. The old has passed away; behold the NEW HAS COME…for our sake He made Him who knew no sin to be sin, so that IN HIM, we might BECOME THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD” (2 Corinthians 5: 17,21)
  3. Jesus said, “Take away the stone!’ Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to Him, ‘Lord, by this time there will be an odor (stench), for he has been DEAD four days.” We are or were DEAD IN OUR SINS. (John 11: 39)
  4. But, once we have been transformed to new life in Christ Jesus, “We are to God the SWEET AROMA of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing!” (2 Corinthians 2: 15)
  5. God Almighty, in and through death to ourselves, in and through new life in the LORD JESUS CHRIST, can bring us out of the tomb, get rid of the stench of our old selves and our old lives, and make us a sweet and pleasing aroma to Himself and to those around us!

NO MATTER WHAT OTHERS MIGHT THINK OR SAY ABOUT US, OR WHAT WE MAY THINK OR SAY ABOUT OURSELVES, GOD CAN AND WILL ESTABLISH US

  1. Psalm 139: 14, “I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works (me); my soul knows it very well.”
  2. 1 Samuel 16: 7, “…for the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
  3. Proverbs 31: 30 (man and woman), “Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman (or man) who fears the Lord is to be praised.”
  4. Proverbs 11: 22, “Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman (or handsome man) who lacks discretion.” [A man or woman without good judgment, without good reason, without right perception, sound advice and speech and behavior, is not appealing no matter how good they look on the outside]
  5. Luke 22: 19-20, “… this is MY BODY, which is GIVEN FOR YOU…this cup is the new covenant in MY BLOOD, which is SHED FOR YOU.”
  6. Isaiah 43: 3-4, “For I am the Lord Your God, the Holy One of Israel, Your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba IN EXCHANGE FOR YOU. Because YOU ARE PRECIOUS IN MY EYES, and HONORED, and I LOVE YOU, I give men IN EXCHANGE FOR YOU, peoples IN EXCHANGE FOR YOUR LIFE.” [This is for the saved, surrendered, committed, transformed believer in Jesus Christ. If you are not saved, you are still dead in the tomb– in your sins., but this CAN be you!]

(The Lord led me to this)

Question: What is an “epitaph” and what is its purpose?

Answer: An epitaph is “a phrase or form of words written in memory of a person who has died, especially as an inscription on a tombstone.” (Question: When we say in America that something is carved in stone, what do we mean?) “Something by which a person…will be remembered.” “Some epitaphs are specified by the people themselves before their death, while others are CHOSEN BY THOSE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BURIAL.”

The Lord helped me to understand that the inscription Pilate put on the Cross, “JESUS OF NAZARETH, KING OF THE JEWS,” is His son’s EPITAPH: a permanent and established reminder TO EVERYONE, chosen by God Himself—the One responsible for the burial—of the TRUE and LASTING IDENTITY of His Son. It is Almighty God saying the same words HE put in Pilate’s mouth in response to the Jews who were saying other, false things about Jesus, when it says, “WHAT I HAVE WRITTEN, I HAVE WRITTEN.” In other words, these words are the TRUTH and they WILL NOT BE CHANGED to fit what you think about Him! Hallelujah! And once we are His re-born sons and daughters, the same can be applied to us! How wonderful our God is and how blessed we are!

{Another very interesting thing the Lord revealed to me—no coincidences with Him—is that when you take the epitaph of our Lord and write it in Hebrew: Yeshua, Hanazarei, W melech, Hayehudi m… the first letters, written as an acrostic, form YHWH and prove that JESUS IS LORD AND GOD, because that is the unspeakable and unpronounceable Name by which the Creator revealed Himself to His people! WOW! Another PROOF of Jesus’ true identity as God Himself!}

Let me stop here and remind us that WE ALL WANT TO HEAR GOOD THINGS about ourselves. WE ALL WANT TO BE ENCOURAGED. NONE OF US WANTS TO HEAR ANYTHING BAD about ourselves, even if it’s the truth. That’s why Joel Osteen and false prophets are so popular and why kings in the Bible surrounded themselves with these types of men, and why the real prophets who spoke God’s words were hated and punished and jailed and killed. We want to and should SEE OURSELVES AS GOD SEES US. But, in order to not just be petted and stroked, and for us to APPRECIATE and be HUMBLY GRATEFUL for what JESUS HAS DONE FOR US, we need to know what we are and were before HE SAVED and TRANSFORMED us and MADE US NEW. Think back to the words in our worship song by Casting Crowns. Here are some verses that will help us think about WHAT WE ARE VS. WHAT WE CAN BE or WHAT WE WERE VS. WHAT WE HAVE BECOME!

James 4: 14, “…for YOU ARE A MIST that appears for a little while and then VANISHES.”

1 Peter 1: 24-25, “All FLESH IS LIKE GRASS, and all its glory like the flower of the grass. The GRASS WITHERS, and the flower falls, but THE WORD OF THE LORD REMAINS FOREVER. And this Word is the Good News that was preached to you.”

Psalm 14: 3, “They have ALL TURNED ASIDE; together THEY HAVE BECOME CORRUPT; there is NONE WHO DOES GOOD, not even one.”

Isaiah 64: 6, “We have ALL BECOME LIKE ONE WHO IS UNCLEAN, and ALL OUR RIGHTEOUS DEEDS ARE LIKE a polluted garment (FILTHY RAGS). We ALL FADE like a leaf, and OUR INIQUITIES, like the wind, TAKE US AWAY.”

Psalm 51: 5, “Behold, I WAS BROUGHT FORTH IN INIQUITY, and IN SIN DID MY MOTHER CONCEIVE ME.” (Our sin is CONGENITAL—A DISEASE or physical and spiritual abnormality PRESENT FROM BIRTH

Now let’s read about and hear how the Lord sees us when we have been re-born. Let’s read and hear what He writes as OUR EPITAPH. Let’s see how HE HAS ESTABLISHED US, how OUR IDENTITY IN HIM is SET FIRMLY forever, if we are convicted towards our sin, if we have godly sorrow over it, if we have confessed it, if we have made Him our Lord, if we have surrendered our lives to Him, if we by faith have received His grace…

1 Peter 2: 9, “But you are (now) a CHOSEN PEOPLE, a ROYAL PRIESTHOOD, a HOLY NATION, a people for HIS OWN POSSESSION, that you may PROCLAIM the EXCELLENCIES OF HIM who CALLED YOU OUT OF DARKNESS and into His marvelous light!”

1 John 1: 7, “The BLOOD OF JESUS CLEANSES US FROM ALL SIN.”

2 Corinthians 5: 18, “…He GAVE US the MINISTRY of RECONCILIATION.”

2 Corinthians 5: 19, “He has ENTRUSTED TO US the MESSAGE of RECONCILIATION.” (Is that message rightly placed? Are we doing it?)

2 Corinthians 5: 20, “Therefore, WE ARE AMBASSADORS FOR CHRIST, as though God is MAKING HIS APPEAL THROUGH US.”

2 Corinthians 5: 21, “He made Him to BE sin (not just to carry them or take them as a burden upon Himself) who knew no sin, so that IN HIM WE MIGHT BECOME THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD.”

Revelation 19: 8, “She (the church, the bride of Christ) was GIVEN CLOTHING OF LINEN, BRIGHT and PURE.”

John 17: 22, “The GLORY that You have given Me I HAVE GIVEN TO THEM…”

1 Corinthians 2: 16, “For who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to instruct Him? But WE HAVE THE MIND OF CHRIST.”

Isaiah 43: 1, “But now thus says the Lord, HE who CREATED YOU, O Jacob, HE who FORMED YOU, O Israel: ‘ Fear not, for I HAVE REDEEMED YOU; I have CALLED YOU BY NAME, YOU ARE MINE.’ “

Isaiah 61: 3, “To grant those who mourn in Zion—to GIVE them a  BEAUTIFUL HEADDRESS INSTEAD OF ASHES, the oil of GLADNESS INSTEAD OF MOURNING (crying, sorrow), the garment of PRAISE INSTEAD OF A FAINT SPIRIT; that they may BE CALLED OAKS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, the PLANTING OF THE LORD, that He may be glorified.”

Ezekiel 36: 25-26, “I will sprinkle CLEAN WATER on you, and you SHALL BE CLEAN from all your uncleanness, and from all your sins I WILL CLEANSE YOU. And I will GIVE YOU A NEW HEART, and A NEW SPIRIT I WILL PUT WITHIN YOU. And I WILL REMOVE THE HEART OF STONE from your flesh and GIVE YOU A HEART OF FLESH” (a soft and tender heart).

2 Timothy 1: 7, “For God DID NOT GIVE us a spirit of FEAR, but of POWER AND LOVE AND A SOUND MIND/ SELF-CONTROL.”

So, if you want to know and to have the RIGHT PERSPECTIVE and see yourself as Almighty God sees you, if you think you are fine the way you are and basically a good person and do not KNOW the LORD GOD, you are deceived. You think too highly of yourself and too lowly of your Creator. You are a sinner in need of salvation, in need of being rescued. He is willing to do that, but you must ASK HIM to reveal your true state and nature before Him, so that you can SEE AND ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR SIN. READ ISAIAH 6: 1-5.

If, however, you think too lowly of yourself and you have been made whole, have been redeemed, are a new creature IN CHRIST JESUS, do confess your TRUST IN HIM ALONE for the forgiveness of your sins, and do believe that God has raised Him from the dead (Romans 10: 8-9), then YOU NEED TO READ and BECOME FAMILIAR WITH the EPITAPH HE HAS WRITTEN AND FIRMLY ESTABLISHED FOR YOU, read it to yourself often, believe it, let others see it by your speech, actions and countenance because WHAT HE HAS WRITTEN, HE HAS WRITTEN about you! Glory to the One true God, the Most High God, the Name above all names, JESUS CHRIST the MESSIAH!

Amen, and again I say Amen.

Gaining (or Re-gaining) the Right Perspective

Think back to when you were in school when you consider your answers to these questions, just to give you the right frame of mind for what we are about to learn—or relearn. Look up first, and listen intently to the words, a song called “I Give Myself Away”—especially one on YouTube® performed by children listed as the Sunbeams Choir.

Question 1:  Is the world “helio-centric”? (Does the earth revolve around, or focus on, the sun?)

Question 2:  Is the world “geo-centric”?   (Does the sun revolve around, or focus on, the earth?)

Question 3:  Is the world “anthropo-centric”?  (Does the earth revolve around, or focus on, mankind?)

Question 4:  Is the world “me-centric”? (Does the earth revolve around, or focus on, you?)

Question 5:  Is the world “Theo-centric”?  (Does the earth revolve around, or focus on, Jesus Christ?)

Here are a few bullet points for us to know and remember:

  • Almighty God does everything with and in ORDER (not disorderly or chaotically)
  • Almighty God is EFFICIENT (not wasteful, not in vain)
  • Almighty God has a PURPOSE for everything (not random, not by chance, not by coincidence)
  • Almighty God does NOT NEED us for anything but, as part of His design and creation, He made us for His plans (not for our own), we serve Him (He does not serve us!), He is the Potter and we are the clay
  • Our lives, therefore, are not our own (1 Corinthians 6: 19-20; whether we are believers or not. If we are, we have been bought with the price of His precious blood and have been ransomed from death. If we are not  Christians, He made us; we did not and cannot create ourselves. Either way, we are not our own.)
  • Nothing we have belongs to us (1 Timothy 6: 7; we came into the world with nothing of our own and cannot take anything out of it.)

This is a vital and key revelation:  When we give ourselves away, we are not doing the Lord some great service by surrendering our wills to Him who made us, WE ARE SIMPLY RETURNING SOMETHNG WE HAVE STOLEN BACK TO WHOM IT BELONGS! Let me say that again. Let that truth, that concept sink in and take lasting root. WE ARE SIMPLY RETURNING OUR MINDS, HEARTS, BODIES AND WILLS—EVERYTHING WE HAVE WRONGLY TAKEN POSSESSION OF—BACK TO WHOM IT BELONGS, TO HIM WHO GAVE IT TO US TO BEGIN WITH.

Now, we can be used by Him (for the purposes for which we were made). Remember, we were not randomly created to roam the earth and do whatever we want, and then one day die. We were made BY Him, FOR Him and to FULFILL His plans. Remember, Jehovah is efficient (He doesn’t do anything with no specific reason or strategy in mind). Question:  According to 2 Timothy 2: 20-22, were we made as dishonorable vessels or as honorable vessels? Were we created to be used for dishonorable purposes or for honorable purposes? Question:  Are you silver and gold right now in your life? Or are you wood, stone and clay? The LORD JESUS CHRIST spoke about what happens with the useful and the unuseful, the honorable and the dishonorable. Question:  If you buy something like food, or a toy, or a tool, and it doesn’t taste right or it doesn’t work like it’s supposed to (for the purposes which they were made or cooked or bought), what do you do with it?  Matthew 13: 30 says, “Let them both (weeds and wheat) grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, ‘Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned (the dishonorable vessels, the ones for dishonorable use), but gather the wheat (the honorable vessels, the ones for honorable use) into my barn.’” John the Baptist talks about Jesus in Matthew 3: 12 saying,”…He will clear His threshing floor and gather His wheat into the barn (Heaven, the Kingdom of God), but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire” (Hell, the abode of Satan, his demons and the unsaved).

Jeremiah 10: 23 says, ”I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks, to direct his steps.” Question:  What does this mean? It means that the knowledge, desire, will and ability for man to order his own steps (live out his life) rightly is not in him, that he does not possess it. We just learned that the dishonorable vessel cannot be used and must be thrown away, and that the chaff will be bundled up and burned (thrown into Hell by himself, his own choice not to be used, his own desire not to be transformed, to remain in a dishonorable condition- sinful). And we learned that it is not within the grasp, understanding and ability for humans to be honorable, to be 100% pure wheat. SO, WE NEED TO BE SAVED. WE NEED TO BE CLEANSED. WE DON’T WANT A REAPER; WE WANT AND NEED A SAVIOR. That is JESUS CHRIST, THE MESSIAH!

Just as the Apostle Paul told young Timothy to “flee youthful passions” and to “cleanse himself (via the Savior) from what is dishonorable,” we need to do that as well. We need to hear Jesus’ voice and follow after Him (to the end). Luke 14: 33 exhorts us to sober-up spiritually and naturally with these words, the very words of Yeshua (Jesus), “So, therefore, any one of you who does not RENOUNCE ALL THAT HE HAS, cannot be My disciple.” Question:  So, make up your mind right now in this moment, and COMMIT yourself: Will you be dishonorable chaff (to be thrown out and burned—don’t do anything differently, stay your course, remain the same, keep doing just what you are doing)? Or will you be honorable wheat (to be gathered into the barn—repent and be transformed by the mercy of the King of Kings)? Joshua, Moses’ successor, put it concisely this way in chapter 24 and verses 14-15, “Now therefore fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or THE gODS of the Amorites IN WHOSE LAND YOU DWELL. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Today is the day of salvation. The Kingdom of God is at hand. He will come like a thief in the night, in an hour no one knows. Don’t be locked out of the wedding feast. Once the doors close, they will not reopen. Choose life for yourself, and for your children. The WAY has been made. The RANSOM and BAIL have been paid on your behalf. Confess your sinfulness. Acknowledge your guilt. Ask for forgiveness. Be cleansed. Give glory, praise and thanks to God, the Most High!

“But Are These CONSECRATED?”

“But Are These CONSECRATED?”

Everyone, it seems, is leaving the church building in fear of, or due to, the Coronavirus. To be fair, the pastors want their sheep to be safe as any good pastor should. But should we react like the world and leave our places of worship that are acceptable to our God as places to corporately meet with Him and one another?

Yes, we can meet with our Lord and Master just about anywhere such as in our homes and in our prayer closets, because He is grand and is not limited. I agree. But is this evil, wicked, messed up world—it’s one of the reasons we are even having to deal with this global disease to begin with—just any place to be called and considered acceptable to our Holy King? Should we be taking worldly, dishonorable places and using them as if they were honorable and holy when they are not? (2 Timothy 2: 20-21, people and items and places).

One of the reasons the church (ekklesia) is in its current condition—too comfortable, displaying a lack of holiness, still needing milk (and powdered milk, at that) instead of solid food—is because we either nurture and foster this attitude in our shallow preaching, too much talking before the service starts (rather than spending intentional time quietly preparing our hearts to worship Him in spirit and in truth, and to not only hear but to receive the implanted Word), and the readily available coffee. We are in the House of the Living God, not our living rooms or kitchens.

Because of not standing firm and meeting together in God’s consecrated and acceptable place, we are fleeing to Facebook Live, Zoom or some other location. It is good that we have this availability for the disabled, sick, immobile or hospitalized but not to use them in lieu of the “tent of meeting,” the “temple,” or the “synagogue” which are places established by God for us to meet with Him. They are consecrated, sanctified and sacred. They are set apart solely for God’s purposes and usage. Yes, He lives in our hearts! Wonderful! But we are not called to live in relational isolation. We are not like Paul writing letters to churches due to imprisonment, geographical distance or the necessity of being apart due to traveling on a missionary journey and spreading the Gospel. In fact, the very churches he wrote letters to were GATHERING TOGETHER.

The question which should be on our hearts is this: Have we turned these other venues and media into what the Bible calls, and negatively refers to as, “high places”? A high place, many times mentioned in God’s Word, the Bible, is a place primarily on a hillside or mountain used by pagan cultures to worship their foreign, false gods and idols. This is NOT what we are doing, I know. But read this passage carefully. It is found in 1 Kings 3: 1-2 and it says, “Solomon made a marriage alliance with Pharaoh King of Egypt. He took Pharaoh’s daughter and brought her into the City of David until he had finished building his own house and the House of the Lord and the wall around Jerusalem. The people were still sacrificing on the high places because a house for the name of the Lord had not yet been built.” This, at this time, does not appear to be a bad thing in this text here and immediately following, but did you catch that last phrase? It says, “because a house for the name of the Lord had not yet been built.” Today, this very day, we are blessed and our land is blessed with an abundance of places already built for us to MEET in…TOGETHER. We don’t have to go to a worldly place, a modern-day high place, to gather.

Psalm 91 ensures and promises us safety and protection with phrases like, “He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence” (verse 3), “Under His wings you will find refuge” (verse 4), “You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday” (verse 6), “A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only look with your eyes and see the recompense of the wicked” (verses 7-8), “No evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent” (verse 10), “He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways…” (verse 11), “I will deliver him, I will protect him, I will be with him in trouble” (verses 14-15). Why will He do this for us? Because we “dwell in the shelter of the Most High…and abide in the shadow of the Almighty” (verse 1), because He is “my God in whom I trust” (verse 2), “because you have made the Lord your dwelling place” (verse 9), “because (we) hold fast to Him in love…because (we) know His name” (verse 14).

If all of this is not enough to trust Him fully, in addition to knowing His character, faithfulness, steadfast love, mercy, compassion, strong right arm, protection, provision, providence, authority and sovereignty, then maybe this huge boost of truth and confidence is just what we need from the Savior of our eternal souls in such a time as this!

We meet together for CORPORATE encouragement, CORPORATE prayer, CORPORATE praise, CORPORATE unity, CORPORATE usage of our spiritual gifts, CORPORATE love and much, much more! A high place might be okay in a pinch and in the absence of a meeting place, but we are NOT without our places of worship which were built and set apart and still stand. When Almighty God led His people to a chosen destination for them—a land He promised to them—He drove out the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites! He commanded them not to intermarry with them. He told them they were a holy people to Him, His treasured possession (Deuteronomy 7). Ezra 9: 2b laments, “The Holy race has mixed itself with the peoples of the land” like Daniel being taken to Nebuchadnezzar’s house.

In the New Testament, our brother Paul makes the claim in 1 Corinthians 12 that “the body (church) does not consist of one member but of many.” He goes to substantial length and with intentionality in the surrounding text to illustrate that God arranged us that way (verse 18), that we all have specific gifts and each has its own part to play (verses 12-27), that we are all indispensable (verses 19-24) and that “to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good” (verse 7).So, if we are not meeting together, and have essentially made media our temple, sanctuary, synagogue or church, we are disjointed. How does that work according to our Father’s hand and plan? Our spiritual ligaments are being stretched in ways they weren’t intended and designed to.

Matthew 18: 20 tells us, “For where two or three are GATHERED in My name, there I am among them.”

Acts 2: 1 illustrates, “When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all TOGETHER in one place.”

A little later in Acts 2: 42 it demonstrates, “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and FELLOWSHIP, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” Verse 44 continues, “And all who believed were TOGETHER and had all things in common.” Verses 46-47 describe their joyful habit, “And day by day, attending the temple TOGETHER and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.”

Acts 12: 12 reveals, “When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark, where many were GATHERED TOGETHER and were praying.”

In chapter 20, verses 7-8 tell of their continual habit, “On the first day of the week, when we were GATHERED TOGETHER to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and he prolonged his speech until midnight. There were many lamps in the upper room where we were GATHERED.”

Romans 1: 10b-12 shows Paul’s emotional expectancy in these words, “…By God’s will I may now at last succeed in coming to you. For I long to see you, that I MAY IMPART TO YOU SOME SPIRITUAL GIFT TO STRENGTHEN YOU—that is, that WE MAY BE MUTUALLY ENCOURAGED by each other’s faith, both yours and mine.”

First Corinthians refers to the WHOLE CHURCH coming TOGETHER speaking in tongues (for the sake of the unbelievers among them) and prophesying (for the edification of the saints). A few sentences further, perhaps the most compelling, emphatic, unifying and beautiful expressions of the church meeting together exclaims, “When you COME TOGETHER, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Let all things be done for BUILDING UP.” This fills our hearts with joy, with peace, with anticipation, with fulfillment! And it cannot be done in isolation.

This is an exhortation, an urging! This is vital encouragement! This is an Ezekiel-like moment (Ezekiel 2:2) as when he expresses the grace he receives, “And as He spoke to me, the Spirit entered into me and set me on my feet, and I heard Him speaking to me.” He is speaking to ALL OF US, His children. Lastly, I will leave you with some of the most uplifting and ebullient words ever uttered and sweetly expressed concerning the ekklesia, His church, the body, in all of Scripture. King David conveyed the Christian heart’s contentment with the sweet aroma of calm delight found in Psalm 133: 1-3, “Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers DWELL TOGETHER in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.”

The Lord be with you, be gracious to you, give you wisdom, peace and joy.

A Single Word in My Sleep: An Object Lesson in Humility

Hello friends, brothers and sisters! The Lord gave me a dream last night—or a portion of a dream—just before I had to wake up and start to spend my early morning with Him. You know, I don’t get dreams all that often and when I do, I don’t always know what they mean. So I said, “Lord, if you’re gonna give me a dream, I need to know what it means or else it’s useless. Please explain it to me.” What I clearly remember taking away from my dream was the word “EpiPen®.” I was like, “That’s weird. What’s that about?” And I thought, “Do we need that?” We have four boys (brothers, ages ten to sixteen) that are not ours, but we spend a lot of time with them, we’ve known them for over five years, we take them to church, my wife likes to cook for them, we’ve been watching them grow up and everything else good and bad. I asked myself, “Do they need one of those? Do we need to get one of those?”

As I began to meditate on it, ask the Lord what it meant and try to get into the Word (He’s been teaching me about Philippians 2: 3-8, which is about humility and esteeming others as more significant than yourself. And I knew since the first day about two weeks ago that it was something I definitely needed. I know myself well enough to realize that I had to have this instilled in me. I knew this was something I didn’t have in me as a regular part of my spirit, my Christian walk, and I knew that I needed to concentrate on it for a while—perhaps months, if necessary—until it becomes a part of me, part of me.) So I started reading that passage again and, as I did, the Lord brought to my mind once more that there’s a verse in there that talks about “do nothing out of selfish ambition.” Then I also noticed He brought my eyes to another portion of Scripture in the opposing column, but on the same page, which used the phrase “selfish ambition” too. I hadn’t noticed that any other time during the weeks that I’ve been reading this. Of course, I haven’t been reading this other text, but He brought my attention to it.

So, I thought, there’s something about this and I need to know exactly what it means. I mean, I have an idea, but I need to KNOW. Accordingly, I looked it up (selfish ambition) and the Greek word is “kenodoxia.” In the KJV it is translated as “vainglory,” which is really apt because it means glory that is vain. In other words, it’s empty, it’s pride in something you think you have that is actually nothing, there’s nothing to it, there’s no substance, you just think it’s there. And alongside the command from the Holy Spirit through the apostle Paul to us, “do nothing out of selfish ambition,” it further says “do nothing out of conceit” which is part of pride too, right? So, our heavenly Father is saying to “do nothing out of pride,” with selfish motives, don’t think more highly of yourself than you should, “consider others as more significant than yourself” and “look not only to your own interests but to the interests of others.”

He’s telling me all these things and I’m still thinking, “What about this EpiPen® thing? What does that mean?” I looked it up (even though I had heard the name before, my knowledge was quite vague) and an EpiPen® is a medical device, an auto-injector full of epinephrine. It is used when your body goes into what is called (another medical word; I’m learning all this new terminology today!) anaphylaxis,” or an extreme allergic reaction. When I got into the shower later, the Lord Jesus revealed to me by way of me asking myself the question “Well, isn’t that what pride is?” It is puffed up. In fact, when you get an allergic reaction you often get SWELLING; your face puffs up or your tongue gets puffed up or something like that. It can be hard to breathe because of a reaction in your airways, and the air can’t get through. I thought, “What a perfect analogy this is!” So, pride is like having an extreme allergy because you’re getting puffed up and swollen; you’re thinking more highly of yourself than you should. In fact, there are other places in the Bible where it talks about knowledge (for the sake of knowledge) is just puffing yourself up (1 Corinthians 8:1). It’s just pride. It’s just vanity. If you’re gonna get the knowledge but not live it—James says, “Don’t just hear the word, do it;” and “Don’t just be a hearer, but be a doer of the Word”—it does no good. So, we can’t do anything that’s vain or empty or like vapor, or like a cloud or a mist. We have to have substance in our lives. God is saying, “Don’t do anything out of selfish ambition. Don’t do anything out of conceit.”

So, I’m still wondering “Where does the EpiPen® thing come into this?” You know, I understand now that pride is like swelling but an EpiPen® is something you use in an emergency situation to make sure the chemicals in the body are flushed in reaction to an allergic reaction, to calm it, to help it get rid of those substances within us and restores the body back to where it needs to be. So, when I was in the shower, Jesus was telling me that auto-injector is what humility is. As I explained before, He’s been teaching me about humility; TRUE humility, LASTING humility. Like He says in the Word of God, “I am meek and lowly of heart,” He is God of the universe, He’s omnipotent (all-powerful), He’s omniscient (all-knowing), He’s omnipresent (everywhere at one time). How can you say He’s humble? That’s because He uses His power in a way that doesn’t abuse His authority. He doesn’t Lord it over people. He uses it rightly in all situations. But in this He’s talking about how He emptied Himself as a man, not counting Himself equal with God, but being subservient to God as a man, and to live out His life on Earth according to God’s purposes so that we could have salvation from our sins, and eternal life. So, what we need to do is to use a spiritual EpiPen®– which is HUMILITY—to get rid of our pride so that we can admit (confess) our sin and be reconciled to the Creator of our souls! Oh, like David exclaimed, this is too wonderful for me! That’s why I had to initially record it in a hurried and somewhat crude fashion– (in the dark, in my car, in the driveway, in my phone’s voice recorder) very hurriedly and spontaneously. But I long ago learned to write what the Spirit tells me on paper, type it into my phone’s notepad or record the audio because, if I don’t do it right way, I will lose it. His revelations are too precious to let them slip away!

This is where I stopped, or so I thought. Just a few minutes later after I left our neighborhood and got onto the main road and began to ponder all of this, He added on to what He let me grasp before. He said the EpiPen® and the epinephrine it contains were not to be injected into the buttocks like most effective shots, nor into a vein as an IV is, nor subcutaneously (just under the skin), but they need to be injected into the outer and upper thigh area. And this is because the muscle there allows the medicine to have a quicker absorption rate. And isn’t that what we want to do? If we have some kind of allergic reaction spiritually, or spiritual pride, we want to QUELL (a word I have never used in my life, but it’s the word the Lord put in my mind as He was helping me to fully understand all of this and its implications) it as soon as we can. Please pay attention to this, it’s important. So, we want to use humility as we would the EpiPen® and we want to put it into the best place. Because knowledge puffs up, where does knowledge come from? Out of the mind, it doesn’t come from the heart. So, what we need to do is to have humility OF THE HEART so that it can quell (make to subside, to suppress, to subdue, to put an end to rebellion–sometimes by use of force) and relieve the swelling that occurs in the mind! Just as we use the injector and infuse the epinephrine into the outer and upper thigh area and into the main muscle (so it will have the quickest absorption rate and highest effectiveness), we don’t need to use humility in our minds. We need to use it in our hearts! That way, it will be spiritually sucked in a lot quicker!

God bless you.
